Understanding Jewelry Making And Care

How To Care For Moissanite Engagement Rings

Known for its brilliant sparkle and shine, moissanite is the naturally occurring mineral silicon carbide, and it is often compared to diamonds. Moissanites can also be created in a lab, which helps keep costs down and make stunning engagement ring centerpieces. Not only are they aesthetically pleasing, they're also easy to care for and maintain.

Almost as hard as real diamonds, moissanite gemstones are known for their long-lasting durability and scratch resistance. Moissanites are also heat-resistant, so they can easily withstand thorough cleanings.

Since moissanite stones are crystal clear, they can be used in place of diamonds in any type of engagement ring setting. You can find moissanites in any type of cut that you desire, including radiant, oval, round, emerald, cushion, baguette, triangle, marquis, trillion, and even heart for a sweet, romantic look.

Moissanite stones will also fit right into any type of setting, such as rose, white or yellow gold, sterling silver, or platinum metals. You can choose to just have one moissanite stone in the center or have several in a row depending on your engagement ring preference.

Here are some tips for caring for your moissanite engagement ring to keep it looking its best.

Daily Basis

Although moissanite stones are revered for their strength, it's still important to remove your ring before you participate in any strenuous activity. Also, take them off if you'll be using any harsh chemicals, such as bleach-based cleaners.

Also, be aware of any other stone present on the ring. If the ring also features pearls, for instance, remove it before getting your hands wet, such as while doing dishes or taking a shower, as moisture can damage the soft stones.

To keep your moissanite stones as shiny and brilliant as possible, remove the ring before applying lotion as well.

Weekly or Monthly Basis

On either a weekly or monthly basis, depending on how much your engagement ring is subjected to, clean it with a solution of a gentle dish detergent and warm water. Allow the ring to rest in the soapy mix for a few minutes, rinse with clear water, and then pat dry with a soft, moisture-absorbent cloth, such as a chamois.

You can remove any dirt and grime stuck in the moissanite stone's prongs by gently scrubbing it with an extra-soft toothbrush. At least twice a year, have your moissanite engagement ring inspected and polished by a professional jeweler, who may use an ultrasonic cleaner to deep-clean the metal and gemstones.
