Understanding Jewelry Making And Care

How To Care For Diamond Rings

Whether you've invested in a diamond ring yourself or it was given to you as a token of love, proper care and maintenance are essential. To keep the ring looking its best for years to come, there are things you need to do on a daily and even annual basis.

Although is a diamond is considered to be the hardest material in the world, it is still susceptible to scratches and dulling. With the right cleaning techniques, you can prevent the precious gemstones from losing their luster and shine.

Because diamonds may also become damaged due to small chips, it's important to reduce the amount of daily wear and tear on them. If you know you'll be doing a strenuous activity, such as moving heavy boxes or mowing the lawn with a push mower, remove the jewelry pieces first.

Be sure to always keep the rings in a safe spot, such as a jewelry bag, when you're not wearing them. Also, never place them on the edge of a sink while washing your hands, as they may go down the drain.

Here are some additional tips for keeping your diamond rings looking their best for a lifetime:

1. Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Another reason to remove your diamond rings is to avoid subjecting them to harsh chemicals. For instance, always take the jewelry off prior to handling bleach, ammonia, or even household cleaning agents. Also, remove the rings before painting your home to avoid staining.

For convenience, keep a handy ring dish near your kitchen sink and shower so that you have a safe spot to keep the jewelry piece during water activities. While water and basic dish soap and body washes won't damage the diamond, they could dull them or harm the ring's metal.

2. Monthly Cleaning

On a monthly basis, take the time to clean your diamond rings yourself at home. Simply fill a small bowl with a mixture of lukewarm water and a gentle dish detergent or a customized gold and diamond cleaner, and allow the ring to soak for a few minutes.

Next, work off the loose dirt and grime, such as hand lotion residue, using a soft-bristled brush. Rinse the ring with plain water and then pat it dry with a soft cloth.

3. Annual Professional Cleaning and Inspection

At least once a year, take your diamond rings to a jeweler to have them professionally cleaned and inspected for any loose prongs or diamonds.
